Intercom Is Now Live: AI Agents for Your Inbox
Intercom is now connected in AgentTeams. Your AI agents can work the whole inbox: read and triage conversations, reply to customers and leave internal notes, assign, tag, snooze, and close, and look up the people and companies behind every chat. They work tickets and your help center too. And because Intercom tells us the moment something happens, an agent can react when a conversation is assigned to it, a customer replies, or a teammate mentions it in a note, not on the next sweep.
If your support team lives in Intercom, the full picture is on the AI agents for Intercom page. This article covers what is live, how the connection works, and the setups support teams can copy.
What is live
- Conversations, end to end. Search and read conversations with their full history, reply with files attached, leave internal notes, assign to a teammate or a team inbox, tag, snooze, close and reopen, and turn a conversation into a ticket.
- Contacts and companies. Find, create, and update users and leads, tag them, merge duplicates, attach people to their companies, and record events on a customer's timeline.
- Tickets. Create tickets of your own types, move them through their states, assign them, and reply or leave notes on them.
- Help center and news. Search your articles and the rest of your support content, draft new articles into your collections, and write product news, saved as drafts until someone publishes them.
- Reactions to what happens in Intercom. An agent takes ownership of conversations assigned to it, follows up when a customer replies, and acts on a teammate's note or mention. It can also watch new conversations, closes, ratings, new tickets, and new contacts across the workspace.
- Files both ways. The agent reads what customers attach, from PDFs and screenshots to documents and spreadsheets, and attaches its own charts and files to its replies.
Out of the box, the reactions draft customer replies for a teammate to approve before anything reaches a customer. You decide how much autonomy the agent gets, and when.
How the connection works
Intercom connects with a real sign-in, the same model as Help Scout and Zendesk: open your agent's Tools tab, click Connect on Intercom, sign in as the teammate the agent should work as, and approve. There is no workspace ID to type. Intercom tells us which workspace you picked, whether it lives in the US, Europe, or Australia. Every reply and note carries that teammate's name, and the agent sees exactly what that teammate can see. Many teams give the agent its own Intercom seat, with its own name and photo, so customers meet one consistent person.
Real use cases, copy these
- Overnight coverage. Chats that arrive after hours get read, tagged, and answered from your help center where the answer is documented. The rest wait in a sorted queue with a short summary for the morning shift.
- Draft-first replies. When a customer replies on a conversation the agent owns, it drafts the answer and a teammate approves it. Response quality stays yours; response time drops to minutes.
- Handoffs through notes. A teammate mentions the agent in an internal note (“can you check their last invoice?”) and the agent answers in the thread with what it found in your CRM or billing tools, without anyone leaving Intercom.
- Support that knows the account. Pair Intercom with your revenue tools and the agent answering the chat also knows what the customer pays and how long they have been around, so priority follows facts. More patterns in our guide to AI customer support agents.
Common questions
- Will it reply to customers on its own? Only if you let it. The default reactions put every customer reply up for approval; loosen that per action as the agent earns trust.
- Does it work alongside Fin? Yes. Fin can keep answering the questions it is trained on in the Messenger, while the AgentTeams agent takes what reaches your team: triage, drafted replies, lead routing, and follow-ups.
- Which Intercom plan do we need? Any current plan. The agent works as a teammate, so give it a seat of its own or connect it through an existing teammate.
- What does it see? Exactly what the connected teammate sees, nothing more. Disconnecting it in AgentTeams or removing the app in Intercom's settings ends access at once.
Where this fits
Intercom joins Help Scout and Zendesk on the support side of the catalog. Whichever help desk your team lives in, the same agent can now work it.
